A Sunday morning shopping trip turned into an arrest when a 36-year-old man was caught shoplifting—while carrying a sword.

The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. on June 15th at a business near Wonderland Road South and Pine Valley Boulevard. An employee spotted the suspect stuffing items into his backpack.

When the employee approached, the suspect assaulted them and ran off without paying.

Police arrived with a description and tracked him down by 9:50 a.m. in the 3000-block of Wonderland Road South, just 20 minutes after the initial call.

When officers told him he was under arrest, he took off running northbound on Wonderland Road. Additional officers joined the pursuit and arrested him a short distance away.

During the search, police recovered the stolen merchandise and found he’d been carrying a sword.

The employee who was assaulted sustained minor injuries that didn’t require medical attention.

Daniel Timothy Lefurgey has been charged with robbery, resisting arrest, and failing to comply with a release order. He appeared in London court yesterday.
