Denver Barkey, captain of the London Knights, has launched an incredible initiative that’s giving local kids a shot at hockey dreams they never thought possible.

The program, aptly named “Barkey’s Buds,” was created this season as a partnership between Barkey and the London Knights Official Fan Club to provide families and children in London Housing communities with the opportunity to attend Knights games and get inspired by the sport.

“Growing up, I was fortunate to have an opportunity to play hockey and fall in love with the game. I’m now able to provide that same opportunity to kids, and that’s something special I get to do with our fan club,” Barkey shared when launching the program in November 2024.

Now in his fourth year with the Knights, Barkey has committed to supporting seven London Housing communities throughout the 2024-25 season.

The impact has already been significant. According to the London Knights Blog, two families have attended Knights games this season through the program, with the children reportedly “overwhelmed with joy” by the experience.

But the initiative goes beyond just watching games. Barkey’s Buds has also connected these kids with hockey equipment and league opportunities, making the dream of playing the sport accessible to those who might otherwise never have the chance.

Sav Neth, President of the London Knights Fan Club, who grew up in London Housing himself, described Barkey’s commitment as “pure and meaningful,” adding that the kids who have attended games through the program have called the experience “life changing” and now aspire to become future OHL stars.

The London Knights Official Fan Club is selling Barkey’s Buds t-shirts to help fund these opportunities and create a positive environment for participating families.

The timing of this community initiative coincides with exciting developments for the Knights, who have just opened their playoffs at home against the Owen Sound Attack. The team has had an impressive season, recently claiming the Hamilton Spectator Trophy for the second consecutive year.
