Major Intersection Makeover Coming This Spring – Here’s Everything You Need To Know!

City Of London

London’s north end is about to get a serious glow-up as plans move forward for the transformation of one of the city’s busiest intersections.

The Sunningdale Road and Richmond Street intersection is set for a complete overhaul starting this spring, and if you live or work in the area, you’ll definitely want to get the scoop on what’s happening.

The City of London is planning to improve and widen the intersection as part of a comprehensive reconstruction project that will stretch along Sunningdale Road from Villagewalk Boulevard to Redford Road, and along Richmond Street from Villagewalk Boulevard to Uplands Drive.

This isn’t just your average road work, folks. The project includes expanding Sunningdale Road from two lanes to four lanes through the intersection, adding turning lanes to improve traffic flow, and installing brand new in-boulevard bike paths and pedestrian sidewalks.

Underground infrastructure is also getting a major upgrade, with storm sewers being replaced as part of the work.

The city has been planning this transformation for quite some time, with environmental studies dating back to 2009. The Environmental Assessment was completed in 2012, and the detailed design was finalized in 2023.

Construction is expected to kick off in spring 2025, pending final approvals, and will continue throughout the summer and fall months.

For those wondering exactly what the project entails, here’s the full breakdown:

  • Construction of new through lanes on Sunningdale Road and turning lanes at the intersection
  • Complete road reconstruction along Sunningdale Road and Richmond Street
  • New in-boulevard asphalt bike paths and concrete sidewalks
  • Upgraded underground infrastructure
  • Construction of new median islands, curb, and gutter
  • New street lighting and traffic signals
  • Tree removals and fresh landscaping

Curious about how this will impact your daily commute? The City is hosting a virtual pre-construction meeting on Thursday, April 3 at noon via Zoom, where they’ll outline project management details and what to expect during construction. You can register for the webinar through the project website.

If you prefer to chat face-to-face, there’s also an in-person drop-in session scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Stoney Creek Community Centre’s Library Meeting Room.

This isn’t the first public meeting about the project. The City previously hosted update meetings in January 2024, both virtually and in-person at Stoney Creek Community Centre.

For those wanting to stay in the loop throughout the project, the City is offering email updates through their website.

If you have questions or concerns, you can reach out to James Scott or John-Paul Sousa, Construction Business Relations Coordinators, or Jason Rawson, the Project Manager, through the contact information available on the project website.
