London Knights legend Mitch Marner showed why he’s still one of the game’s elite playmakers, dishing out a team-high two assists to help Team Canada capture the championship at the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off.

In a thrilling showdown that came down to overtime, Marner’s magic hands were on full display as he set up Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett for the game-tying goal before connecting with Connor McDavid for the championship-winning overtime goal.

The victory marked Canada’s seventh championship title in their ninth appearance at an NHL International Tournament.

While Marner shined throughout the tournament, his former London Knights linemate Matthew Tkachuk had a quieter night for Team USA, limited to just 6 minutes of ice time due to injury.

For Knights fans, the tournament offered a nostalgic flashback to 2016 when both Marner and Tkachuk were part of London’s Memorial Cup championship squad. The duo were among four Memorial Cup champions who competed in Thursday’s championship game, alongside Nathan MacKinnon (Halifax Mooseheads – 2013) and Anthony Cirelli (Oshawa Generals – 2015).

The Canadian Hockey League (CHL) was exceptionally well-represented at the tournament, with 30 CHL graduates accounting for nearly 30% of all players competing – more than any other development hockey league in the world. Team Canada led the way with an impressive 21 CHL alumni on their roster, further cementing the league’s reputation as the premier talent pipeline to the NHL.

In other Knights news, the team opened their playoff campaign at home against the Owen Sound Attack on March 28, looking to add another chapter to their storied playoff history.

The 4 Nations tournament showcased not only the world-class talent that has emerged from the Knights program but also highlighted the organization’s remarkable ability to develop NHL-caliber players who continue to shine on international stages.

London hockey fans can take pride in knowing that Knights alumni continue to make waves at the highest levels of the sport, with Marner’s clutch playmaking abilities playing a crucial role in bringing another international trophy home to Canada.
