A wild Sunday afternoon in north London took a chaotic turn when a man allegedly took a stolen Toyota Camry on a destructive path through a residential neighbourhood, narrowly missing children at a playground.

The incident unfolded around 5 p.m. on April 6 in the area of Chippewa Drive and Oakville Avenue, where witnesses reported seeing a brown Toyota Camry driving erratically. According to London Police Service, the vehicle struck a tree in the 1000-block of Chippewa Drive before careening through a school yard—while children were playing at a nearby playground.

But the mayhem didn’t stop there. The car continued westbound on Chippewa Drive, where it collided with a parked vehicle, mounted the sidewalk, and crashed into a fire hydrant. The impact was severe enough to flip the vehicle onto its side.

At this point, the driver reportedly abandoned the now-sideways car and fled on foot. Police were notified around 5:40 p.m. and quickly responded to the scene.

Officers from the LPS Uniformed Division managed to locate and arrest a suspect in the vicinity. During a search following the arrest, police discovered what they believe to be crystal methamphetamine on the suspect. Investigators later determined that the Toyota Camry had been stolen.

Ryan John Wilson, 45, of London, now faces multiple charges including operation while prohibited, dangerous operation of a conveyance, possession of property obtained by crime over $5000, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, and possession of a Schedule I substance.

Despite the dramatic sequence of events, police reported no injuries resulting from the incident.

Wilson was scheduled to appear in London court on April 7 in relation to the charges.
