A tree in London’s university area was struck by lightning yesterday evening, prompting multiple emergency calls and a small power outage.
The London Fire Department responded to the 300 block of Cedar Avenue near Western Road after receiving numerous 911 calls about a tree that had been hit by lightning. Callers reported seeing flames and hearing popping sounds coming from the affected tree.
Emergency crews quickly arrived at the scene to address the situation. The London Fire Department issued a notice via social media at approximately 6:38 PM on April 2nd, advising residents and commuters to avoid the area while they worked to contain the incident.
In a related development, London Hydro crews were also dispatched to the scene to address a power outage affecting approximately 20 customers in the vicinity. London Hydro estimated that power would be restored by 4:00 PM, though it’s unclear if this referred to the following day or was an error in their communication.
The Cedar Avenue area is located close to Western University’s campus and is home to many student residences and family homes. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of spring weather in Southwestern Ontario, where thunderstorms can develop rapidly.
Authorities have not reported any injuries or significant property damage beyond the affected tree and temporary power disruption.
Residents are reminded to stay clear of any fallen trees or power lines, especially following severe weather events, and to report any dangerous situations to emergency services immediately.
