A collision between a London Police Service cruiser and a city bus has left three people injured and triggered a provincial investigation into the incident.
The crash happened around 1:50 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon at the busy intersection of Queens Avenue and Talbot Street, right in the heart of downtown London. A marked police vehicle was involved in the collision with a city transit bus, according to officials.
The bus driver and two passengers sustained minor injuries from the impact, but one passenger was more seriously hurt with what police are describing as serious but non-life-threatening injuries. All three were taken to hospital by paramedics for treatment.
The police officer behind the wheel of the cruiser walked away without any physical injuries, according to the London Police Service.
Because the incident involved a police vehicle and resulted in serious injuries, the Special Investigations Unit has stepped in to take over the case. The SIU is Ontario’s civilian law enforcement agency that investigates incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
The agency has invoked its mandate, which means London Police can no longer comment on the specifics of what happened. Anyone with questions about the investigation is being directed to contact the SIU directly at 416-622-0748 or their toll-free number at 1-800-787-8529.
The full police release provides the basic details of the collision, but further information about what led to the crash or the current condition of those injured hasn’t been released.
Queens Avenue and Talbot Street is one of London’s busiest intersections, with heavy foot traffic and multiple bus routes passing through the area regularly. The collision would have disrupted both vehicle and transit traffic during the afternoon rush period.
